Does it have to support EVERYTHING the Dual Shock 2 could do? The DS2 had pressure sensitive buttons, which (as far as I know) nobody does except Sony, and they dropped them for the DS4. Also, the L2/R2 triggers changed from being pressure sensitive buttons to full-on triggers for DS3. So if you want 100% compatibility and 100% authenticity there's no option except a Dual Shock 2.

There are a lot of USB adapters that let you connect a Dual Shock 2, typical price for these is $15. As cool as pressure sensitive buttons are, I wouldn't recommend basing your controller decision on that alone since few games take advantage of them. A Dual Shock 3 or 4 will usually do everything the Dual Shock 2 needs to do, plus wireless, plus they have actual analog triggers. The Dual Shock 4 has other features that make it especially attractive as a PC gamepad (like a trackpad for mouse input!) Both the DS3 and DS4 can be connected to your computer with a normal bluetooth adapter, though this requires custom software that prevents you from connecting other bluetooth devices to the same adapter.

Personally, I use a wireless Xbox controller with a USB wireless adapter when I prefer wirelessness, or a USB adapter with a DS2 when I want authenticity. These are both very easy options that don't require any of the custom software that the DS3 and DS4 need. DS2 is the most genuine, obviously, since it's a ps2 controller but it will be harder to use since you will need an adapter. DS3 is a ps3 controller and is essentially the same as ps2 controller and is easier to use (just use scarlet's xinput wrapper or w/e its called nowadays). DS4 is a ps4 controller and is different in several ways to both the DS2 and DS3 but it is just as easy to use with your PC as the DS3. I would recommend a DS3 as it is a middleground between compatibility with your PC and similarity to a DS2. But its up to you.
